Organic Bedding Information

Eliminating all chemicals is the goal of creating a green home environment. But using natural household cleaners and eating organic food products is only part of the equation. Organic bedding, for adult beds and cribs, creates an environmentally safe sleep environment, in which you don’t need to be worry about you or your baby breathing in chemicals as you sleep. Most bedding, whether sheets or pillow cases, is coated with formaldehyde to be wrinkle-free. Cotton, whether being sprayed with chemicals or treated with chemicals when turned into fabric for bedding and clothing, absorbs pesticides easily, but, because the pesticides used to treat a standard cotton crop are not regulated, the chemicals used have the potential to cause cancer and other health problems. In terms of bedding, regular cotton sheets have been known to cause aggravated respiratory functions, headaches, rashes, and sleep pattern disturbances.

100% organic cotton bedding has been shown to provide relief from these allergies and MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities), skin problems, and SIDS by eliminating chemicals that are breathed or slept in. For babies, with more sensitive, absorbent skin, having chemical-free, non-toxic free bedding is essential, as a baby will be sleeping for 70% of its first few years and should not be exposed to harsh chemicals. When looking for organic bedding for yourself or a baby, try to see if it is Organic Trade Association (OTA) approved.

Organic bedding can be made from cotton, wool, or bamboo. All of these materials have inherent antibacterial and antifungal qualities. Bamboo sheets are either made with 100% bamboo or a bamboo and cotton mixture, between 60% cotton and 40% bamboo to 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. Bamboo, however, can be in a non-organic fabric mixture with rayon, which is not OTA approved. In fact, the fibers from the bamboo-rayon mixture are considered to be regenerated fibers – almost synthetic – and rayon itself is a material that inherently results in pollution.
